Like so many other VFX artists, Star Wars was the film that propelled me to start my film making journey. I speny almost every day after school watching A New Hope on repeat, and I remember hearing from my Dad how awe struck the audience was when he watched it in the cinema upon initial release. I briefly touched a couple of Star Wars films before A Last Jedi, but this was the first one that I felt I really made a meaningful contribution.
The work I was part of all focued around the planet Crait, which has a red crystal core while being snow covered on the surface - leading to many dramatic key frames. Along with Josh Ong, we built the cave system for the chase sequence of the Millenium Falcon going through the planet - tackling the questions of lighting and design. Next I designed the door breech, from the scorch marks on the floor, showing the red base, to the door itself and the twisted ruin that was left. It was a team effort to create the hanger that our heroes are hiding out in. Finally it was all hands for the cliffs and icy ground where the final dual takes place.
I loved being on this film and thought of my Dad who had recently passed away, the whole time. He would have love it.
